DETROIT -- Syracuse junior forward Julie Rising was named College Hockey America (CHA) Offensive Player of the Week after recording four points in a road sweep at Wayne State. Niagara junior goalie Jenni Bauer was selected Defensive Player of the Week, while WSU blueliner Jenaya Townsend was tabbed as Rookie of the Week.
Offensive Player of the Week
Julie Rising - Junior - Forward - Anchorage, Alaska/Capuchino - Syracuse
Rising assisted on the game-winner in Friday’s 2-0 victory at Wayne State. In Saturday’s contest with the Orange trailing 2-0, Rising scored SU’s first goal, assisted on the tying goal and then netted the game-winner with only 43 seconds left in regulation. She finished the weekend set with 13 shots on goal and a +4 plus/minus rating.
Other Nominee: Vicki Bendus (Mercyhurst).
Defensive Player of the Week
Jenni Bauer - Junior - Goalie - St. Catharines, Ontario/St. Francis Secondary - Niagara
Bauer stopped 83 of 85 shots (.976 save percentage) in Niagara’s split at top-ranked Mercyhurst. She limited the nation’s top offensive squad to one goal in each contest, while holding the second-best power play to one marker in nine opportunities. This is the third time this season Bauer has been selected CHA Defensive Player of the Week.
Other Nominees: Hillary Pattenden (Mercyhurst), Brittaney Maschmeyer (Syracuse), Delayne Brian (Wayne State).
Rookie of the Week
Jenaya Townsend - Freshman - Defense - Sherwood Park, Alberta/Sherwood Park Kings - Wayne State
Townsend contributed at both ends of the rink for the Warriors. She scored her first collegiate in Saturday’s contest, which put WSU ahead 1-0. Defensively, the Wayne State penalty killers stopped all three Syracuse power-play chances. SU entered the weekend second in the CHA and fifth nationally in power-play percentage.
Other Nominees: None.
