Syracuse Game Notes
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse University women's ice hockey team will look to continue its successful road trip when it travels to Niagara for a conference set on Friday, February 5 at 7 p.m. and Saturday, February 6 at 2 p.m. The Orange swept Wayne State for the first time last weekend to improve its record to 15-12-1. It will be the final away game for SU before it closes out its home schedule against Robert Morris.
Rising on the Rise
Junior forward Julie Rising earned her first CHA Offensive Player of the Week award for her two-goal, two-assist performance at Wayne State. She took the team lead in goals after scoring her 14th marker of the season against the Warriors. The Anchorage, Alaska native scored two goals, including the game-winner, in SU's come-from-behind win at WSU. Her two goals were a season-high, while her three points tied a season-high. Rising finished the weekend set with 13 shots on goal and a +4 plus/minus rating.
Last Time Out
Senior goaltender Lucy Schoedel earned her third shutout of the season and sixth as an Orange on Friday, Jan. 29 at Wayne State. She finished with 27 saves against the Warriors in Friday's game. Junior Julie Rising netted two goals as Syracuse erased a 2-0 deficit and scored three unanswered goals to sweep the Wayne State Warriors on Jan. 30 in Detroit. SU's top forward line consisting of Rising, junior Stefanie Marty and sophomore Megan Skelly accounted for all eight of Syracuse's points. The Orange played with a short bench due to team illness and dressed only 14 skaters against the Warriors. Despite being outshot 28-8 in the first two periods, SU showed no sign of fatigue in the third and outshot WSU, 17-4.
Orange Against the Purple Eagles
Syracuse and Niagara skated to a 2-0-2 record during their opening season of play. The Purple Eagles were SU's first conference victory in program history when it won, 2-1, on Jan. 30, 2009. Junior Stefanie Marty scored 25 seconds into the contest, while senior Gabrielle Beaudry netted her first Orange goal with less than five minutes remaining in regulation. Earlier this season, the two teams split the series in Syracuse. SU won, 2-1, the first night, while Niagara held on to win the second matchup, 3-2, for its first victory against the Orange.
Scouting Niagara
The Purple Eagles (9-11-4, 4-4-2 CHA) accomplished a program first when it defeated No. 1 Mercyhurst, 2-1, for its first win against a top-ranked team on Jan. 30. The Lakers outshot Niagara, 45-15, for a season-high in shots on goal. Autumn Stuntz and Jennifer MacLean both scored goals for Niagara, while Mercyhurst did not score until late in the third period. Jenna Hendrikx leads the team with 11 goals and 8 assists, while Jenni Bauer has posted a 2.24 goals-against average and .919 save percentage in 24 games this season.
