Saturday October 27, 2012 Results: Mecyhurst defeats Minn. St. Mankato 3-1, Syracuse shuts out Connecticut 2-0 and Robert Morris falls 3-0 to Boston University

Women's Hockey Completes Sweep Of Minnesota State * BOX SCORE

ERIE, Pa. - The fifth-ranked Mercyhurst women's hockey team got two goals from freshman Emily Janiga and 19 saves from senior goaltender Stephanie Ciampa to hold off tenth-ranked Minnesota State 3-1 on Saturday afternoon from the Mercyhurst Ice Center. The win completed a weekend sweep of the Mavericks and improved the Lakers' record to 8-1-1 on the season. The Mavericks dropped to 4-4-2 on the season.

With the victory, Ciampa improved to 5-0-0 on the season and 10-0-0 for her career. Her shutout bid was erased with 5:06 left in regulation on an even-strength goal by Minnesota State's Lauren Smith, but she lowered her season goals against average to 1.40 and upped her save percentage to .934 on Saturday.

Meanwhile, Janiga recorded her third multi-goal of the season and her sixth multiple point contest of the year. The freshman from East Aurora, New York leads the Lakers with nine goals this season.

After a scoreless first period, the Lakers jumped out to a 1-0 lead at the 4:32 mark of the second period. Junior Christie Cicero let go of a wrist shot from the left wing circle that snuck over the glove hand of Minnesota State's starting netminder, Danielle Butters, for her seventh goal of the season. Cicero is already just one goal shy of her career-high of eight goals she scored as a freshman. Sophomore defender Caroline Luczak had the lone assist....

SU RECORDS FOURTH SHUTOUT AT UCONN, 2-0 * BOX SCORE

Goaltender Kallie Billadeau notched her third shutout of the season in the Syracuse ice hockey team's 2-0 win at Connecticut (2-6-1) on Saturday afternoon. Junior defenseman Akane Hosoyamada led the Orange (4-4-0, 2-0-0 CHA) offensive effort, notching a goal and an assist. Sophomore forward Shiann Darkangelo also added a goal for the Orange.

"We did an excellent job defensively today," head coach Paul Flanagan said. "We held Connecticut to 13 shots on net and scored a couple of nice goals to get the win."

With less than four minutes left in the first period, UConn's Michela Cava was called for tripping. On the Orange power play, Hosoyamada would find Darkangelo who slipped the puck past UConn's goaltender, Sarah Moses. The tally would eventually count as Darkangelo's second game-winning goal of the season. Junior defenseman Brittney Krebs was credited with the secondary assist.

It was then Hosoyamada's turn to score. At 1:19 in the second period, the defenseman scored her first goal of the season off of a play with passes from senior forward Holly Carrie-Mattimoe and sophomore forward Nicole Ferrara.
