LINDENWOOD: The Lindenwood
women’s hockey team begins the 2013-14 season this
Friday and Saturday with a two-game series against WCHA Bemidji State … the Lady Lions and Beavers have played just one before at a neutral site, with Bemidji State winning the game by an 11-0 score in 2011… the Lady Lions are looking for their first victory in program history over an WCHA program … Lindenwood returns 13 letterwinners from last year’s team, including second-team all-CHA performers Nicole Hensley and Alison Wickenheiser … the Lady Lions return nine of their 10 players on their top two lines at the end of last season … Hensley was named the national rookie goalie of the year and the CHA Rookie of the Year last season after having a .922 save percentage … Wickenheiser led Lindenwood with 12 goals, 12 assists, 24 points, and three game-winning goals … Lindenwood has a 5-1-2 record for its last eight regular season games … Lindenwood’s 2013-14 captain is Alyssa West and alternate captains are Chelsea Witwicke and Kendra Broad … Lyndsay Kirkham and Witwicke both tied for the team-high with nine power-play points last season.
MERCYHURST: The Mercyhurst University women’s hockey team kicked off their 2013-14 season with two exhibition games against The University of Western Ontario and Whitby Wolves. The Lakers scored four goals in the third period to break away from a tight game on Saturday against Western Ontario. Seniors Christie Cicero and Christine Bestland tallied two goals throughout the contest. Senior Kaliegh Chippy and Freshman Jillian Skinner tallied the other two goals to win 6-1. Junior goaltender Amanda Makela appeared in the first period against Western Ontario, stopping all nine goals faced. Sophomore Julia DiTondo relieved Makela for the last two periods, allowing two goals on six shots faced in the 40:00 minutes of action. On Sunday, Mercyhurst skated past the Whitby Wolves 9-1 to complete their preseason tilt. Seven different Lakers scored a goal, while ten different players tallied at least one point in the win. Bestland (2 g, 1 a), Chippy (2 g, 1a), Janiga (2 g, 1a), Skinner (3 a), Bram (1 g, 2 a), and Byrne (1g, 2a) all had a multi-point game. DiTondo played in the entire 60:00 minutes, allowing just one goal on 14 shots faced.
Earlier in the week, Head Coach Michael Sisti announced his captains for the 2013-14 season. Senior Christine Bestland was named captain and will be wearing the “C” on her jersey for the season. Senior Christie Cicero, and juniors Caroline Luczak, Molly Byrne, and Shelby Bram were named assistant captains and will wear the “A” on their jerseys. The Lakers also welcomed six incoming players for the 2013-14 season, goaltender Sara Besseling, forward Taylor Accursi, forward Megan Whiddon, forward Brianna Kennelly, defenseman Paige Horton and defensemen Jillian Skinner.
Mercyhurst was announced eighth in the country according to the opening USA Today/ USA Hockey magazine poll. The Lakers are coming off their ninth straight appearance to the NCAA tournament last season, and their third trip to the NCAA Frozen Four. The Lakers were also voted first in the College Hockey America Coaches Poll.
The Lakers travel to Minnesota State-Mankato to open their 2013-14 regular season on September 27-28 in Mankato, Minnesota. Puck drop is set for 7:07 p.m. and 2:07 p.m. EST respectively. Last season, the Lakers were the fifth-ranked team in the country, facing the tenth-ranked Minnesota State-Mankato. Mercyhurst swept the series by 8-1 and 3-1 victories at the Mercyhurst Ice Center.
RIT: The Tigers open the 2013-14 season on Friday and Saturday. On Friday, RIT hosts the Toronto Junior Aeros in an exhibition contest beginning at 5 p.m. at Ritter Arena. On Saturday, RIT opens the regular season with a road contest at nationally-ranked Clarkson at 4 p.m. RIT, now in its second season as a DI program, will look to build off a very successful year in 2012-13, finishing with a .500 record (16-16-1) while advancing to the semifinals of the College Hockey America Postseason Tournament as a first year Division I program. RIT finished tied for third in the CHA standings and won its first two Division I postseason contests. Head Coach Scott McDonald returns 14 players from last year's team and has 10 highly touted recruits who will join the squad this season.
SYRACUSE: SU enters the 2013-14 season coming off the best season in program history… Last year the Orange finished 20-15-1 and 13-6-1 in the CHA, the firstseason SU had winning records both in conference and overall… The Orange returns seven of its top 10 scorers including Margot Scharfe, who scored the second most goals last season… Akane Hosoyamada, the CHA Best Defenseman of 2012-13, returns for her final season after posting four goals and 12 assists last season... Senior Kallie Billadeau will be in net again this year. She recorded a 16-9-0 record in 2012-13 and a .940 save percentage, the best in the CHA. She also recorded a 1.56 GAA, the second best in the CHA by .01 points… Syracuse also has a solid secondary goalie in Jenesica Drinkwater, who posted a 4-6-1 record last season and a .890 save percentage… Defender Kaillie Goonough returns after scoring 12 assists and two goals last season.
